“We need to finally put all these unsolved murders in Henderson to rest. Your feud with Ryan is permanent, frankly, as death is,” Paul said. The Ravens flew up, and it was startling to see their broad wings as they scraped at the gray sky. Jacob could hear them croaking, and it made him uncomfortable. Paul got out of the car, put his hands on his gun belt, and hesitated for a brief moment before he walked to the office suite and front desk to sign in and wait.
Jacob knew Paul was right; the friendship he had with Ryan died along with Ethan’s murder. Ryan came out with a patch over his right eye. He immediately put on his sunglasses and returned to the unmarked squad car to drive. Jacob watched the Ravens land atop the optometrist’s building and wondered whether it was another hallucination or a superstition that soaked through the tactical vest. Their last chance was Paul, and he would succeed in lowering the doctor’s guard; he must find the ability, Jacob thought.
